Glencore scholarship success

An ongoing program of scholarships offered by mining company Glencore is providing a boost for students studying at Emerald Agricultural College.

In 2015, the two organisations established a partnership that supports the college's students through scholarships and study tours.  To date, over $73,000 has been disbursed to students to offset tuition and accommodation costs.

One such student is Jordan Linsket.  Jordan's home town is Rules Beach, and he enjoys the practical component of completing Certificate studies at the College.

"I think all of my study is good, but I particularly like cropping and operating machinery," he said.

After graduation, Jordan would like to enter the cropping sector.  "I would like to put my machinery skills to work in a plant or machinery operator role.  Sorghum is my favourite crop to work with," he said.

"I am thankful to Glencore for the scholarship as I have learnt a lot and feel I will achieve better results in life having attended College," said Jordan.

Glencore's Community Relations Manager, Craig Strudwick, said the partnership demonstrated his company's commitment to making positive impacts in areas where Glencore coal mines operate, and was an important step in ensuring that those mining operations successfully co-exist with other land users.

"With 75% of the land owned by our coal operations being used for agriculture - predominantly cropping and beef production - we have strong links to the farming sector. We're delighted to continue our association with central Queensland's peak agricultural institution, with a program that can help develop the region's next generation of farmers," Mr Strudwick said.

Queensland Agricultural Training Colleges CEO, Mark Tobin, said these scholarships provide students with an excellent opportunity to further their studies in the agricultural industry and become its future leaders.
